Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) Information: History and Facilities
In 1930, the city's present-day airport opened on a large expanse of farmland, being known in those days as the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. By the mid-forties, the city had purchased the land for use as a military airbase and over the years, many flights linked the main Texan airports.

However, in the seventies, Austin was keen to develop a new, commercial airport and wanted to begin using Bergstrom, along with the US Air Force. When these plans fell through, a new site was chosen close to the city of Manor. The decision by the military to close to Bergstrom airbase meant that it was now available and a new plan of action was drawn up to convert it into a civil airport. Finally, in 1994, the Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) was officially opened and was soon serving thousands of passengers on a daily basis.

Austin Bergstrom Airport's terminal features wireless Internet access throughout all levels, as well as conveniently positioned ATM machines. Postal and business facilities are adequate for most needs, while a surprisingly varied selection of restaurants, cafés and bars make spending time in the terminal a pleasure. Those in need of a bite will find eateries such as the Harlon's BBQ, the Highland Lake Bar, Wok & Roll, and the locally based Waterloo Ice House, which opened its first branch on Congress Avenue in 1976.

There are several quality shops to explore within the complex of Austin Bergstrom Airport, including the Book People, the Austin Chronicle and Sierra News. Also of interest to passengers are various prominent art works around the Barbara Jordan Terminal, parking for over 10,000 vehicles, and various information counters.
